Sphere Medical gains two non-executive directors

MB medtech news UK monitoring and diagnostic specialist Sphere Medical has added two new Non-Executive Directors to its board: John Gregory and Stephen Mahle.

John Gregory, who has been appointed senior Independent Director and Chair of the company’s Audit Committee, is a chartered accountant with a record of non-executive roles with new and fast-growing companies.

He was Chairman of IS Pharma through its merger with Sinclair Pharma, then Non-Executive Chairman of the merged group. Currently he is Non-Executive Chairman of Foresight VCT and a non-executive director of a number of private companies. In March 2011, he was named AIM Non-Executive Director of the Year in the annual Peel Hunt and Sunday Times Non-Executive Director Awards.

Stephen Mahle is the former Executive VP of Medtronic, from which role he retired in September 2009. He joined Medtronic in 1972 and became President of its Pacing business, then President of Cardiac Rhythm Disease Management.

Sphere Medical CEO Dr Stuart Hendry said: “Mr Gregory and Mr Mahle bring a wealth of experience to Sphere Medical’s Board at a time when the Company is transitioning to a publicly listed company on AIM and approaching the commercialisation phase for its lead products.”

Stephen Mahle said: “I am delighted to be joining the board of Sphere Medical as they begin to launch a line of critical care patient monitoring products that has the potential to improve patient outcomes, simplify the care of critically ill patients and reduce health care costs. Sphere can provide exactly the kind of technology solutions to meet the challenges of 21st-century medicine.”

John Gregory commented: “Sphere Medical is a company on the threshold of commercialising the application of its unique platform technology. Its initial products are for use in hospital settings and have the potential to enhance patient care and consequently reduce costs of patient treatment.”

Based in Cambridge, Sphere Medical is developing a range of monitoring and diagnostic products to assist patient management in acute care. The company’s devices will enable near real-time measurement of blood gases, electrolytes and drug levels with laboratory accuracy at the patient bedside.
