Keep your eyes on the prize

An innovative eye implant at a UK clinic has helped an international rifle shooter stay at the top of his game.

Nick Peters from Chester, aged 66, has undergone surgery for glaucoma and cataracts to preserve his skill in small-bore rifle shooting. He has since won the Jersey Open Smallbore Championships.

A patient at The Prospect Eye Clinic in Altrincham, Cheshire, Nick underwent a cataract extraction in December 2008 with a new aspheric intraocular lens implant.

Nick has competed for Wales and Great Britain at an international level in the sport. He was referred by his optometrist for treatment at the onset of glaucoma - and thanks to the innovative techniques of consultant surgeon Brendan Moriarty, he claims his vision is better than ever.

"Shooting is such a major part of my life that the prospect of giving it up due to my impaired vision was a genuine concern for me," Nick said. "Thanks to the treatment I've undergone my vision is really sharp and there's no excuse for me to be off target!"

Brendan Moriarty, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at The Prospect Eye Clinic, commented: "It has been a great pleasure to treat Nick, as the restoration of his vision has clearly had a massive impact on his life.

"It's a great message for other people in his situation suffering with glaucoma or cataracts, to reassure them that these conditions can be treated and the results are literally life-changing."
