On World Kidney Day 2010, the European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association (EDMA) has emphasised the vital role of the diagnostics sector in protecting people with diabetes from chronic kidney disease (CKD).
EDMA's message supports the joint initiative of the International Society of Nephrology and the International Federation of Kidney Foundations, which have given this year's World Kidney Day campaign the theme 'Protect your kidneys, Control diabetes'.
Diabetes is the most common risk factor in the development of CKD: 40% of people with diabetes develop CKD as a consequence of their condition.
The number of people in Europe undergoing renal dialysis or kidney transplants has doubled to quarter of a million in the last 15 years. It is estimated that around 8% of the European population currently suffers from CKD, which may have no immediate symptoms and go undiagnosed.
For early detection and treatment of CKD, it is important to monitor the blood glucose, urine albumin and serum creatinine levels of people with diabetes, EDMA emphasised. In vitro diagnostics (IVDs) thus make an essential contribution to the management of CKD.
EDMA represents national associations and major companies engaged in the research, development, manufacture or distribution of IVDs in Europe.
