Bionic hand strengthens its grip

The pioneering i-LIMB Hand prosthesis from Scottish company Touch Bionics has been upgraded with pulse technology that enhances the user's grip and motor control.

The i-LIMB Pulse has been launched, joining a family of upper limb prostheses that have been fitted to more than 1,200 patients worldwide.

The new bionic hand offers significant new features: pulsing grip strength, software-enabled grip patterns, a strong aluminium chassis and Bluetooth-enabled control software.

"Having experienced over three years in the market with the i-LIMB Hand, we have gathered unparalleled insight into the needs and requirements of users of upper extremity prosthetic devices. This has contributed significantly to the development of the i-LIMB Pulse," said Stuart Mead, CEO of Touch Bionics.

"For example, we know that the majority of users, whether male or female, prefer a device with natural body lines, so we invested considerable time in miniaturising components and internal structures to offer two sizes that will accommodate almost all user preferences."

The i-LIMB Pulse uses electronic pulsing technology to provide controllable grip strength. When the hand closes on an object, the user can select the pulsing feature to increase the grip force. This facilitates such everyday activities as tying shoelaces or fastening a belt.

Its aluminium chassis makes the i-LIMB Pulse able to carry a load up to 90kg.

BioSim, the hand's patented Bluetooth-enabled software, allows the clinician and - for the first time - the user to customise the device's features and control strategies. It also assists training by recording and analysing the usage pattern of the device.

Based in Livingston, Scotland, Touch Bionics is a leading supplier of advanced upper-limb prosthetics. The company won a Queen's Award for Enterprise 2010 in the Innovation category, reflecting its success in commercialising its groundbreaking inventions.
