Rapid Hepatitis B test approved by EU

A rapid and inexpensive new test for the Hepatitis B virus has received regulatory approval in the European Union.

The new Hepatitis B Rapid Test from company Diagnostics for the Real World delivers accurate results within half an hour - enabling the doctor to take immediate action on diagnosis.

Developed with a Strategic Translation Award from the Wellcome Trust, the test uses simple dipstick technology to deliver an accurate diagnosis on-site. Current methods of hepatitis B diagnosis involve sending patient samples to laboratories for analysis, taking days or weeks.

The hepatitis B virus (HBV) is highly infectious, and is endemic in many parts of the world. The virus is spread through contact with infected blood or other body fluids, and can cause serious health problems.

The new test will enable doctors to screen pregnant mothers and blood donors and take steps to reduce transmission of the virus.

Dr Helen Lee from Diagnostics for the Real World, who led the development of the test, said: "Our test is simple, quick, inexpensive and can survive very hot conditions for many months - all vital factors when you are working in poorer parts of the world."

Ted Bianco, Director of Technology Transfer at the Wellcome Trust, said "We are extremely pleased that the product is able to meet the exacting standards required by the EU regulatory agencies. The news marks a significant milestone on the road to getting affordable diagnostic tools into the developing world."

The company has already launched a rapid test for Chlamydia, available within the EU and many other countries. Rapid tests for the detection of HIV and influenza are in the pipeline.
